Reception Recommended Reading

At St Francis Xavier’s, one of our key aims is to help every child develop a genuine love of reading. We believe that sharing high-quality, engaging books is an important part of making this happen.

Over the past few years, we have carefully developed the books available in our school library, classroom book corners and class reading collections. We select texts that are engaging, rich in vocabulary and of a high quality, while also providing the right level of challenge for our children.

We want our children to experience a wide range of wonderful stories, authors and ideas, helping them to become confident, enthusiastic and lifelong readers.

Windows and Mirrors

Some books can be described as ‘Windows’ and ‘Mirrors’. Both are important in helping children develop a wider understanding of the world and a strong sense of identity and belonging.

‘Window’ books give children a glimpse into the lives and experiences of others. They can introduce children to different cultures, religions, languages, families, appearances and ways of life, helping them to understand and appreciate experiences that may be different from their own.

‘Mirror’ books reflect children’s own lives, experiences and identities. Seeing themselves and their experiences represented in books helps children to feel seen, valued and included, while developing a sense of belonging.

Providing a rich balance of both ‘Window’ and ‘Mirror’ books is an important part of creating an inclusive and diverse reading experience for all children.

Below are some of our recommended ‘Window’ and ‘Mirror’ reads for children aged 4 to 7.
